UND Student Health Insurance
« on: July 26, 2007, 11:19:35 AM »
. . . does it exist?

They claim you can get it, and I'm sure I checked off a box somewhere when I became a graduate student, but I am under the impression now that it's not a "real" health insurance plan, and that I am only covered for accidents that happen while performing my duties as a university employee.  If this is the case, it's bullshit.

Why would a university not want to offer insurance for that group of people that is least likely to be able to pay for health care, but active in doing the actual teaching work at the university?

I think I'll try to learn some more about this and get the word out--this may be something for the Graduate Student Association to make some noise about.

That would be stupid if it only included accidents at work.

Raise some hell about it!

Okay, the word I hear is that we are covered for getting hurt even if it is not on the job, but from what I have read, preventative things like physicals, etc. are not covered.

There seems to be very little literature about this, so I am going to find the right people to talk to about it.

You would think it would be like normal health insurance.

Why cant they do preventive things.  You do have a health clinic dont you?

We do, but you have to pay for it sometimes.  Say I have a sore throat, I go in and get it checked out--no problem, they cover it.  Say I need to get a physical for flight school--have to pay for that.

Well thats sucks. I suppose fees would have to go up if they included physicals?

Let's just stick to one problem at a time now, why don't we? ;)

Do you know if undergrads get any insurance at all?  I'll be starting there in the fall.

That's a good question.  I know you get to go to the health center, but if you can stick on your parents insurance for longer (you usually can while you are in school), it would probably be the best for you so you don't have to pay for silly things.

Staying on my parents' insurance has actually screwed me over. Some little loophole in their plan says that all non-emergency work has to be done in my hometown. That means I've paid out of pocket for anything I haven't been able to go home for. That includes $300 of tests/blood work/prescriptions last spring when I had a particularly horrible infection.Make sure you know whether everything is covered before it becomes a problem.

I've never had to deal with that myself, but it would be a good thing to check.  Preferably before you got sick or hurt.

Oh that sucks. I might have to check on my parents now.
