** High Priority **

Students of UND,

Very often in our time at UND issues arise that affect our lives.
Sometimes it's the Twamley Shuffle*, sometimes its professors that
aren't the best teachers, and sometimes its larger issues like Higher
One (UND Pride Card), Parking Permit prices, new fees, and many others.

As students, we often find ourselves in a position of weakness when it
comes to dealing with these issues.  It can seem, at times, that we are
simply at the mercy of higher powers; that we are unable to make change,
where change is most needed. Oftentimes, we must place our hopes in the
hands of someone we don't know, who – as far as we can tell –
doesn't put students very high on their priority list. It can be
difficult, frustrating, and even disheartening at times, but giving up
is the first and only step to failure. It is not a lack of power that
keeps us from our goals; it is our acceptance of the notion that there
is nothing we can do.

You have more power than you think. All you need to know is what your
source of power is, and how to use it. See, power really comes in two
forms: money and people.  We may not have a lot of money individually,
but we do have the people.  All in all we have 12,748 students on our
campus.  Together we can influence the actions of every department,
every faculty member, and every single decision-maker on campus, in the
city of Grand Forks and in the State of North Dakota.

The problem is getting people engaged.  We are asking you to become
engaged.  We need you to participate. If we come together as one Student
Body, we really can get any change we need for the common good of us
all.

We have several plans to attack the issues that are important to
students. By participating in these things and by getting your friends
involved, you are making change possible.

1. We need to find out what the issues are. If you have something
that's bothered you this year or in the past, please stop by the Student
Government Office and ask for an "Issue Report."  We'll just ask that
you write a brief summary of what happened, and if we need more details
we'll contact you later. What’s more is we will keep you updated on
how your issue is being handled, and we’ll even give you the option to
help us carry out our strategy.

2. We need students to have their voices heard. to inform students and
show decision-makers that their decisions impact students.  We are
planning on holding Forums throughout the rest of the year on select
topics that are important to students. These Forums will allow students
to hold administrators accountable, and will also help to ensure that
students are getting the most accurate and up to date information.
Students deserve a chance to explain how a decision affected them, and
they should have the right to ask questions (and get answers) about any
decision that is made.  Our first forum will be at Archives on Thursday,
December 4th at 5pm. The topic will be the university’s new financial
aid disbursement system: Higher One and the UND Pride Card.

3. We need to use multiple methods to show decision-makers that
students care.  We will have petitions prepared and ready to be sent to
state level decision-makers to ensure tuition and fees don't increase
very much – or at all. We need you to come in and sign them when you
get a chance, so we can show our legislators that we refuse to be
ignored.

Together we can make the changes that are important to you, but we need
your help to do it. Do not be passive about your concerns or your
experiences. Do not be apathetic about the decisions that shape your
life. Find passion in the realization that these are issues you can
control, and acknowledge that your goals can become a reality. Then act,
whole-heartedly, and with the firm belief that you will succeed; and
above all…never, ever give up.

Sincerely,

Tyrone & Mike

Open Positions on UPC
The University Program Council is now recruiting open positions for the
2009 term! Please stop by the Student Government office to pick up an
application!

We want to apologize for our e-mail about the UPC event in late
October.  A political candidate planned a special television event
directly over it, and the presenter asked us to postpone our event until
afterwards.  We decided to fulfill his request with the assumption that
many people who would be interested in his presentation would also want
to see the television event that evening.  After we sent the e-mail a
few students mentioned that it looked like a political endorsement.
This was not our intention, we apologize for the miscommunication.
Student Government does not endorse any political candidates.

SAFE Ride

Safe Ride is a program that allows students to get a ride from anywhere
on-campus to another on-campus location.  For example if you are
studying at the library or the Union until late into the evening and
don’t feel safe getting back to your Fraternity, Sorority, Residence
Hall or On-campus Apartment just call 777-SAFE (7233).  Safe Ride is
available to students Monday - Thursday, 10:00 p.m.-12:30 a.m.
and Friday - Sunday, 5:00 p.m.-12:30 a.m.
