Grand Forks, ND – The City of Grand Forks is pleased to announce the official dedication of the Grand Forks Bikeway System, which was named by City Ordinance after Andy Hampsten in 1992.

The dedication will take place at Sertoma Park on Sunday, May 13, 2007, at 1:00 PM. Sertoma Park is located on the English Coulee at South 34th Street & 11th Avenue South. Both Andy Hampsten and Mayor Mike Brown will speak at the dedication.

Andy Hampsten is a former resident and well known international bicycle racer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Andy won the 1988 Giro d'Italia, the 1986 & 87 Tour de Suisse & was twice 4th overall in the Tour de France.

The dedication is in conjunction with two other bicycling events: The first is a 30-mile “fast” road ride with Andy Hampsten in the countryside around Grand Forks, starting at 9:00 AM on Sunday, May 13 from the parking lot of the Ski & Bike Shop, 1711 South Washington Street. The second is a Tour of the Bikeway System, which is a “family fun ride” of six stages along the System, starting at 1:15 PM, Sunday May 13, from Sertoma Park, just after the dedication.

With 30 years of development, the Grand Forks Andy Hampsten Bikeway System has over 40 miles of bike paths, bike lanes, and signed streets, including two bike/pedestrian bridges over the Red River and several underpasses, and the Grand Forks portions of the Greenway bike paths.
